“ Bullwinkle is originally from the state is Moosylvania, a small island in the Lake of the Woods, and is actually its governor. The ownership of the state is the subject of dispute between the United States and Canada, with each country claiming it belongs to the other. As a publicity stunt, Ward and Bill Scott, the show’s head writer and voice of Bullwinkle, bought a small island on a Minnesota lake, named it Moosylvania and started a national tour and petition drive to campaign for Moosylvania’s statehood. After visiting 50 cities and collecting signatures, they went to Washington to present President Kennedy with their petition. At the White House gate they declared, “We’re here to see President Kennedy. We want statehood for Moosylvania.” They were escorted from the property at gunpoint and didn’t learn until days later that they had shown up during the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In 1969, Chairman Mao commanded the construction of a second Beijing beneath the surface of the original city, designed to accommodate all six million of its then inhabitants, so that if nuclear war did kick off, folk would still have somewhere to hang out and play Mah Jong while the rest of us burnt to death in a shower of atomic rain. War never came, but the city is still there.

Fascinating. Complete with pictures.

Apparently there is an official tour also, though seeing pictures of this part of the underground city is really fascinating and the pictures have a strong omg factor. Other articles quote 40% as the percentage of the population it was designed to accomodate.

Leopard seal teaches photographer how to catch penguins!  If you watch anything today…make it this. insanity.

This is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen. Adorable.

how much do I want to do this one day….

This is really wonderful, though it seems like the seal isn’t teaching him how to catch penguins, it’s trying to feed him the penguins. Really marvelous and so touching.
